THE EPIC NEW THEATRE PRODUCTION GEOLOCATED ON A REMOTE ARCTIC ISLAND

EXPERIENCE THIS FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND OPEN WORLD SOUND THEATRE©

Celebrated author Hjalmar Hansen returns home to the Arctic island of Ingøya, the crucible of his novels that have made him a household name. Driven away over 40 years ago, he must now face the ghosts from his past and the island that continue to haunt him.

Viking rituals, witch trials, Napoleonic wars, Nazis occupation, forced evacuation and all manner of tales from this ‘rock at the end of the world’ transport him back as he walks across the island, one last time.

Created by THE FIELD STATION from stories collected from the islanders themselves and the astonishing history of Finnmark, THE ISLAND IS DEAD is an immersive location-based theatre production performed on the remote Northern Norwegian island of Ingøya, deep in the Arctic at 71° North.

Written by Oliver Dawe and Benedikte K. Sandberg, this groundbreaking new fusion of binaural audio, narrative drama, new music, 3D sound and geolocation technology transports you on a spectacular journey to bring the island and a young girl back from the dead.

THE ISLAND IS DEAD

Available in both English and Norwegian language, THE ISLAND IS DEAD is a permanent site-specific play that takes 2.5 hours to experience through THE FIELD STATION’s new geolocated audio headsets.

Our unique process of fusing geolocation technology, binaural audio, and 3D sound design with sonic dramaturgy enables us to seamlessly interweave landscape with narrative drama, transforming an entire geographical area into a theatre stage - OPEN WORLD SOUND THEATRE©

Plunged into a sonic open-world under the midnight sun or polar night, audiences are free to explore their surroundings, follow characters and interact with their environment in what ever way they choose, culminating in both a physical and poetic journey across breathtaking landscape, all dictated by individual speed and movement, making no two experiences the same.

Beginning in the old church in the fishing village of Inga, the story guides the audiences to walk a 6 km circular route alone across Ingøya. Following the island’s road, they meet characters, encounter memories and remember long-forgotten stories - all brought to life by a cast of some of Norway's finest actors, and scored by new music, soundscapes and songs.

Inspired by over 38 hours of recorded interviews with the inhabitants of Ingøya (past and present), academics and local historians -  these real-life stories are the catalyst for this thrilling new fictional play.
